NOWCAST - Rain tonight and tomorrow heavy at times then showers and cooler Thursday and Friday. Snow levels dropping down to 1,000 feet or so by Thursday late. More rain over the weekend and long range outlook looks a bit interesting with some folks thinking it will get very cold next week and beyond for a good touch of winter. Still early to tell but stay tuned.

OUTCAST - Joe Bastardi of Accu-Weather has this to say about our weather next week: "The Pacific Northwest, get ready, winter is on the way but I am not yet ready to say whether this one will bring the snows that we saw with the last one into the coastal areas, though the cold is coming in the next 10-15 days." So we will see. Everything has to work out just right and one computer model GFS, gets everyone excited but I will wait until other models come around on this. We are in prime time for cold and snow but it has been a long long time since we really had a good blast of arctic air.

Anyway, I have been surfing the net and others are beginning to think our neck of the woods may get cold soon. I know we are in prime time and I wonder if most of the models have the mathematical equations built in to figure out just how a true arctic blast works over us. It has been so long since a true deep one that these versions of the models weren't even around and data injected probably doesn't even cover all elements. It will be really interesting as a scientific test to see how it all evolves and if it does come to pass just how accurate they are. We are in prime time of the year, cold air to far north, signs of change but some nitpicking details are missing. I will wait day by day for a few days to see how it comes together. I am not bold enough to stick my head out yet over what I see. The last really arctic outbreak with strong east winds and snow blowing off the roofs was nearly 30 years ago (1978/79), heck I didn't have a personal computer then. Who did? I remember looking at the MRF a week before the cold in December 1978 and my mouth was drooling . And it came to pass, the Columbia River at Vancouver had ice shore to shore with huge chunks floating down, east winds so strong you could hardly open your car door where Who Song and Larry's is now. That is what we want! The further west you went in
Frank T. is the random drawing winner of the weather calendar for leaving his comment on Tuesday, December 19. Congratulations Frank.
It was snowing today in El Paso Texas, nearly two inches worth. It rarely snows in El Paso (all that hot sauce you know). There were lots of oddities last month and last year. Snowiest December in one city and snow less in another. Two feet of snow in Dorothy's home state of Kansas this week.
OFF TOPIC - Well, another new year is off and running by golly. I watched the Rose parade on TV Monday and just had to chuckle with the crowd all bundled up wearing mittens and gloves. The announcer said it was 50 degrees early in the morning. Folks here wear shorts at that temperature and just a sweatshirt. It was 36 degrees here at the time and yes gloves were in order. But the 58 degrees today was certainly balmy. Enough for a record high in PDX.
I have gotten off to a slow start with my resolutions this year. I have them in my mind, but need to transfer to paper. But I will get with it in a day or two and then hopefully, no stopping me. What are my resolutions? Well, stay tuned and I may divulge some of them and others, well, maybe not. I don't want to be held to high standards by any means! Others I may list for manner of public record and accountability. How are YOU doing anyways??

This year's weather is sure defying forecasts of a mild El Nino...even though weak El Ninos typically have a wide variety of weather, but it seems awfully wet.
I'm interested in next week, some of the latest models bring in the cold/snow in less than a week which is a good sign, now if they continue to move it closer not further away!
Pat, I would love to see your pics, as you know I'm a photographer and historic pictures really interest me.
BTW: My resolutions include eating more poorly and spending money. So far I've accomplished them!
