May is on its Way!
Monday, April 30, 2007

NOWCAST - As April rolls out later tonight and May sneaks in under the cover of darkness, clouds and rain will blanket the region as well. Cooler temperatures will dominate the scene with snow falling in all the higher ski areas by Wednesday. Could be clap of thunder and small hail anywhere. This unsettled pattern will remain the rest of the week. At least we had a good weekend weather wise for the end of April despite the periods of clouds that moved inland at times.
OUTCAST - Boy there has certainly be a myriad of varied weather events this past week around the country. Very severe in some areas ranging from dry winds and roaring wildfires, to devastating tornadoes and floods. Late spring snows too. In my little corner of the world here in the Pacific Northwest, all has been rather calm with nothing to write home about.

The other day when the skies were blue, the sun was shining and the birds were singing, I decided to get some gas in my little truck and I had to take a deep breath when the pump ended at $50.00. There was a large motor home next to me and I just had to take a peek after he finished just so I wouldn't drive away under a gray cloud or something. His gas bill to fill that large fish tank was $325.00. I can drive for about two weeks on a tank and I bet that guy in the motor home has to fill up at each stateline he crosses at least. Fun comes at a price.
Peace be with you all.

It's Friday But Not The 13th!
Thursday, April 26, 2007
NOWCAST - Hey, Friday's coming up in just a few hours TGIF for most of you and just another day in the hay for some of us. Eat your hearts out. Fair weather should reign on Friday rather than the real rain. Could be a sprinkle but I think we'll luck out and enjoy 65-70 degree temperatures. The weekend should hang together for a decent spell before May Day rolls in with what looks like more clouds and showers.OUTCAST - Congratulations to the Weather Channel with its 25th anniversary on May 2. According to NOAA, Solar Cycle number 24 will begin soon and run for the next few years. It will be curious to see what affects this has on our current global warming issues. Things may indeed settle down a bit as this cycle is not predicted to be as severe as the last one. For all you want to know about this hot spot, click here.

You'll notice the KOIN TV banner from their web site has a new face, well not so new to local viewers but new to this station. Bruce Sussman joined the team this week replacing ousted Jeff Baskin. I watched his first show last evening at 11 pm. He did a very well done job and after his stint Jeff and Kelly welcomed him and at that very moment a HUGE fly landed in front of him on the desk. Kelly made a comment and picked up a wad of papers and hit it. Killed it dead right on camera. Sussman said, "Well we have carnage on the set. I better watch out." After a few ramblings from Kelly and Jeff, Sussman said we need cleanup on aisle five. It was a kicker. I hope they show it again. Talk about down to earth and character. I really enjoyed the relaxed unrehearsed moments. I guess this is one fly in the ointment that did good. Sussman is a breath of fresh air for KOIN and should weather this newscast well. Welcome Bruce to KOIN!

Fair Weather on The Horizon
Wednesday, April 25, 2007NOWCAST - After the few dribbles of rain yesterday, it appears like fair weather will appear for Oregon and SW Washington as high pressure builds over us. A funnel cloud was reported at 5:20 pm Tuesday 5 miles WNW of Everett. Any rain that falls the next day or two will be up towards Puget Sound and BC. Highs will be above seasonal normals Thursday through Sunday. A nice way to end the month of April I would say.
OUTCAST - The office of the Washington State Climatologist is still on its way to be an official office of the government. SB6001 passed the Senate but several sections of the bill were eliminated by the House, partially establishing the state climate office. Funding was passed for 2007-2009 allowing the office to run at its present level however.
Weather Outlook from the OWSC -"The Climate Prediction Center's 1-month outlook for May indicates a slightly increased probability for above normal temperatures and equal chance conditions for precipitation. Similarly, the 3-month outlook for May-June-July suggest equal chances of above, below or normal temperatures and precipitation for Washington. In the tropical Pacific, sea surface temperatures have been consistent with ENSO neutral conditions and may transition to La Nina conditions in the next 3 months based on the current observed atmospheric trends and as predicted by a few models. However, most models suggest ENSO neutral conditions will prevail for the remainder of the year. With the current spread of the forecasts and the typically low forecast skill of ENSO in the spring, there is considerable uncertainty as to whether or not La Nina may develop and therefore, not much emphasis should be placed on the current ENSO forecasts. Historically, ENSO forecasts issued in the summer and fall have been much more accurate than those issued in the Spring. Three Weeks Down, One To Go!
Monday, April 23, 2007NOWCAST - Another shot of those April Showers Tuesday then the rest of the week and into the weekend looks like fair and mostly dry weather. Highs will rebound Wednesday and run 65-70 degrees all week. Perhaps close to 80 over the weekend! All in all, not much to write home about.
OUTCAST - And the global warming beat goes on and on. You by now heard of Sheryl Crow's suggestion to help save our forest and reduce greenhouse gases. Only use ONE sheet of toilet paper when using the bathroom. Ha! She was quoted as saying, "Although my ideas are in the earliest stages of development, they are, in my mind, worth investigating. One of my favorites is in the area of forest conservation which we heavily rely on for oxygen. I propose a limitation be put on how many squares of toilet paper can be used in any one sitting. Now, I don't want to rob any law-abiding American of his or her God-given rights, but I think we are an industrious enough people that we can make it work with only one square per restroom visit, except, of course, on those pesky occasions where 2 to 3 could be required. When presenting this idea to my younger brother, who's judgment I trust implicitly, he proposed taking it one step further. I believe his quote was, "how bout just washing the one square out."
I won't even begin to comment on this as I think it speaks for itself. I know after this remark today all kinds of bathroom humor are flying off the walls. It just goes to show you that some of these liberals are full of something. Now the price of TP will go up because some politician will launch some new TP tax. Soak up the sun while it is still free. Oops, I made a three-ply remark!

Thursday, April 19, 2007NOWCAST - Friday looks warm and dry before another cold trough of low pressure moves in for the weekend and of course warming and drying will arrive on Monday! Highs Friday will be a bit above normal, well into the 60's and again next Monday if all goes as planned. No funnel clouds reported today as things settled won a bit. There were scattered showers mainly over the mountains. Hey, did you see the fresh snow on Silver Star and the foothills east of Clark County? The Climate Prediction Center says, The pattern of anomalous sea surface temperatures during March 2007 was consistent with neutral conditions in the tropical Pacific, with average to slightly below-average temperatures . . . these atmospheric and oceanic conditions are consistent with a trend towards a Pacific cold (La Nina) episode. So we went from an El Nino event during the fall and winter months to now, La Nina. Seems like we have one or another. The question remains, are these caused by global warming? From what I can find on the NOAA website, they say more study is needed and a new satellite to be launched in 2009 will help. Stay tuned!

NOWCAST - Several of those April showers were pretty heavy Tuesday and Wednesday accompanied with scattered hail and thunder. A few rainbows were seen and also funnel clouds. One was reported near Battle Ground/Venersborg area on Tuesday. This is the result of very cold air aloft. Plenty of fresh snow on Silver Star today. Things will settle down a bit Thursday with still a few showers about and Friday may be dry. Then chance of showers over the weekend. Things will stay rather cool to about normal for this time of the year.

Those April Showers Keep on Coming!
Saturday, April 14, 2007

This week continues to look unsettled and April-like with cold air aloft dominating the skies producing more showers and a good chance of thunderstorms and hail showers later this week. The Washington and Oregon Cascades will receive more snow this week especially the higher elevations. So expect a dry day Sunday and part of Monday then more showers and cool, unsettled weather all week. Highs seasonal with sunshine otherwise with clouds way below normal.
OUTCAST - Did you know according to the New Mexico State Engineer that in just 15 minutes, more water flows down the Columbia River in Oregon than flows in the entire state of New Mexico in one year? Think about that the next time the rain is running down your back.
Today is my birthday and I am glad the sun was shining at least for a while. It was warm with the sun and quite chilly when those puffy gray/white clouds moved overhead. But that is to be expected in April.
I had an e-mail the other day from Crystal who maintains a web site that tracks global severe weather and other related events,. She says, "I have a website you might like - Global Disaster Watch. I track volcanoes, quakes, freak waves, climate change, etc. In watching all these events, I have come to the conclusion, like yourself, that climate change occurs in natural cycles. But what do you think is the cause of these cycles - I know you said the sun, but what changes its output? Do you think it is something about the area of space we cycle in? I have seen astronomy articles that give tantalizing hints of this but can't find anything that actually states it. Are you aware of any?" I sure haven't but it is an interesting take for sure. So much we do not know about things outside our little space that affects the planet. I'll keep my eyes peeled for anything related to this thought. Thanks Crystal for sharing!

Got to love it.NOWCAST - Tuesday turned out to be not too bad of a day weatherwise with partly sunny skies and only a few widely scattered showers, mainly over the mountains and foothills. Highs were very close to normal, upper 50's to 60 degrees. The wind did have a little bite to it, chilly. Wednesday will be a repeat but with an increased chance of rain and then the same for Thursday and Friday before more rain moves in on the weekend. Seasonal temperatures and chilly at night tonight with lows dipping into the 30's.

More April Showers!
Monday, April 09, 2007NOWCAST - As far as the forecast went for the Easter weekend, we will just plain forget that one. Well, we needed the rain anyways so no complaining! For once we are just about "normal" for the month reversing the drier trend of the past couple of months. Several hail showers were reported around the area today and snow fell down below pass levels in the Cascades. The rest of the week remains unsettled with partly to mostly cloudy skies and a chance of rain showers. However, computer models are keeping the bulk of the moisture to our south but I wouldn't place any bets on that so check the latest forecast before venturing out.
OUTCAST - So much for rapid global warming, snow fell over the Easter weekend from the Great Lakes to Texas with flurries reported in Dallas Easter morning. It is the fifth snowiest April in some parts of Ohio near Cleveland and the coldest April weather in other parts of the area in the past 25 years.
Our 80 degree highs last Friday set a record and I saw the first yellow jacket of the season. The warm sunshine must have woken up this queen bee. I also later on in the evening got five nasty mosquito bites on my legs. Something tells me it is gonna be a bad years for these pests. The frogs are sure singing nightly at a swamp near you. I never mind because I wear ear plugs, croak away fellows.

Another Rebuttal to the UK documentary - Christopher Merchant gives a 45 minute lecture about his thoughts on the film and tries to debunk the film. However, he has some holes in his statements that others would disagree on. And so the see-saw mud slinging, yo-yo tossing goes on. After a while folks will get tired of this and hopefully we can all move on. The weather and climate will evolve as it will. Regardless.

Electrifying aurora over an electrical substation, photo by an Lameer, Porjus, Lapland, Sweden - April 2, 2007NOWCAST - A nearly perfect week so far for Clark County Spring Break with no measurable rain in the bucket so far this month. Thursday and Friday will see highs into the 70's and if we get a quick burst of east winds Friday 80 degrees is not out of the question! The Easter weekend looks like a few more clouds but only a small chance of showers at this point. Cooler with highs in the 60's. Enjoy!

NOWCAST - As skies clear tonight overnight lows will be in the 20's in the outlying areas and freezing in other city locations. A hard freeze just about everywhere. A few scattered snow showers fell at the higher Clark County locations Monday and 1-2 inches of snow fell early this morning around Everett thanks to the PSCZ. Tuesday will see slowly rising temperatures into the 60's with some clouds late in the day and a risk of showers early Wednesday. Other than that mostly dry all week. OUTCAST - There has sure been a lot of severe weather this past week around the nation with numerous severe tornadoes, drenching rains, and cold thunderstorms. It looks like a very active season for thunderstorms and tornadoes with over 50 fatalities already.
Judge OKs global warming suit against government- This is the most bizarre thing I have heard of lately. A federal judge cited Oscar Gore's film as evidence of man caused global warming and has allowed a lawsuit against the US Government. Better watch out folks, it has only begun. Read Here.
The latest release from the IPCC junket will show that in 25 years or so, by 2030 the entire snow and ice will be gone from the Himalayas. Give me a break. Do you know what would have to occur to make this happen? It is over the hill folks.
Global Warming and droughts and famine - No worry folks, the answer will to be to eat more leaf protein and insects in our diets. Yep, no problem so don't worry about it. Read this.
Remember the acid rain episode we went through decades ago? Alpine firs growing for centuries high in the Sierras were dying from the fallout and experts said they would be extinct before the end of the 20th century. Well, I understand they are still surviving along the timberline and appear to be doing quite well. We survived that round and the so called cool down forecast back in the 60's and 70's. And guess what? We will survive global warming as well. Can anyone really predict the world climate decades from now? Better get the weather forecast down first. Do your thing to be a good steward of the planet but don't let the environmentalists and left wing liberals scare you. Yes, there is a price to pay for polluting, but there is a price to pay for spreading extremism, scare tactics, and speculation as well.
John Travolta mentioned that global warming is a great concern but he said recently on a tour overseas discussing the issue, "I may not be the best person to ask as I fly jets." He said that perhaps the solution is outer space and dome cities on other planets. The photo here shows two of his five planes parked at his home in Florida. It must be tough John. He carries a lot of weight in what he says due to his high profile and popularity. Must be his large carbon footprint.
