Snow ON Christmas Day!!! 2007

Yes, Virginia, there is a Santa Claus and he brought us SNOW on Christmas day!! At noon it is snowing at my home in Salmon Creek. Don't know if it will stick but at least it has finally snowed on Christmas Day.

MERRY CHRISTMAS EVERYONE!!

Merry Christmas!

NOWCAST -

As of Christmas Eve it looked like things could be interesting on Christmas Day when precipitation does begin to fall. With the cold air mass in place we could see some snowflakes down to city levels but any sticking snow would be above 800 feet I believe. And then again, we may see no snow at all in the lowlands either. I hate to be on the middle of the fence here but it is not a clear cut snow pattern marginal at best and then only transitional. We could repeat the threat for wet snow Wednesday as cold air behind this front lowers freezing levels once again.

Winter Weather To Continue

NOWCAST- You certainly don't have to be a weather expert to know winter weather is upon us even though the winter solstice isn't until late Friday night. Saturday will be the first full day of winter. Actually, Friday we may get a totally dry day before more weather systems roll in on Saturday continuing into the new year. So rain today, showers Thursday, partly sunny (?) Friday rainy and breezy Saturday. Christmas looks like highs in the 40's with showers. A green one at that. But alas, the odds of a white Christmas are about one in a hundred. The last "official" white Christmas as recorded at Portland was in 1937. However, long range models indicate a possibility of very low snow levels at the middle of next week. STAY TUNED! Check out the forecast by clicking to your right.

OUTCAST -There is still time to pick up a weather gadget or two for that special someone. I helped my sister the other day setup a neat digital electronic indoor/outdoor thermometer that she picked up at a local department store (Fred Meyer) on sale for ten dollars. It includes memory for the minimum maximum temperatures. What a buy. It is sold under the Weather Channel name but manufactured by Lacrosse Technology. It would be a great stocking stuffer for anyone. Another useful instrument is a rain gauge available at all garden centers. Again, you can get an electronic version where you can keep dry and read the amounts inside your dwelling.

Global Warming? That would be a sore topic right now in Oklahoma where thousands are shivering without electric power following ice storms from last week. And more cold is upon them. In fact, much of the upper Midwest and Eastern areas re getting tons of snow, ice, and freezing wind chills. Heavy mountain snows are hitting the Cascades adding to the snow pack. Mount Baker has received about five feet of snow since the weekend!

White Christmas in Vermont - No doubt the folks in Vermont will have a white holiday this year and a far cry from Bing Crosby and the lack of snow in the old Favorite White Christmas video.

Flicks- A sleeper in some theaters is NOELLE, a holiday setting where a priest arrives in a small Cape Cod fishing village to close a parish. I about laughed my socks off at the humble humor embedded in this plot. If you get a chance, go see it! Also out on video is Stardust, a fantasy that I have seen 2-3 times already. It is another spoof that will crack you up and keep you in fantasy land for a couple of hours. A good versus evil romantic drama at its best.

Light Snow Begins at 10:30 am

NOWCAST- As mentioned here earlier last week there was risk of light snow flurries on Sunday and sure enough they begin this morning. It is snowing lightly from Vancouver Wa to Vancouver BC. Not much accumulation is expected as the moisture supply is limited. Only a dusting ( T- 1 inch) is expected especially higher elevations. Enjoy!

Aftermath Continues

Funnel cloud photo taken Thursday afternoon near Salem by Greg Russell and submitted to Matt Zaffino, KGW TV

NOWCAST-
Rather quiet and easy forecast coming up. Northerly flow with some fog, some clouds, some sun and much cooler with freezing temperatures overnight if we get any clearing. Chance of some easterly winds at times and a few light showers possible as weak weather systems drift southward from BC. Snow levels will be very low if we do get precipitation causing some snow on hilltops. This will continue for 5-7 days. No big wind storms or floods in the near future. Sigh.

OUTCAST - The photos you see were taken by Steve Pierce of Vancouver. He drove to the coast and south from Seaside to Lincoln City today to view the aftermath of the big storms. Thanks for sharing Steve!

Top-
Highway 26 just east of Seaside Cannon Beach Junction.

Second - Bay City where 129 mph wind gust was reported.

Third - Highway 26 "blast zone"

Bottom- Muddy pavement at Tillamook

Well, It Was A Wild Ride

NOWCAST - Few showers Wednesday through Friday but overall fairly quiet and much cooler. We should see below average temperatures by the weekend with weak weather systems from time to time dropping down in the northerly flow that will be establish and may persist for some time. That means very low snow levels once gain but at this point, Seattle fairs once again to have the best shot of lowland snow. Stay tuned

OUTCAST -
The storms from last weekend caused so much damage it is unbelievable in some places. Highways shut down to the coasts, Interstate 5 closed to Seattle and on and on. I am not going to report on all the damage, the news sources are doing an excellent job of that. I just reflect back to last Saturday when locally we were flirting with snow flurries and enjoying the holiday season. We knew it was going to be a big storm, remnants of three old typhoons. But the duration and placement left many to wonder just how insignificant we are when nature strikes her fiery. After all is said and done, many long standing records will be replaced by new ones. I drove up to Ocean Shores on Sunday for a day trip and hit snow at Chehalis all the way to Aberdeen in the early morning hours and hit heavy rain and high winds Sunday evening on the way back. Boy did I just make it. The waters were rising right behind me. The beach at Ocean Shores had sand blowing two feet deep from south to north as my hand held wind gauge was pegged at 75 mph. 30 feet seas were pounding the jetty at the entrance to Grays Harbor. It was a sight to be seen. My prayers and thoughts go out to all those affected by this round of weather.
